      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Despite some memorably grizzled performances, True Detective's second season is florid to a fault and so unrelentingly grim that it becomes about as much fun as being stuck in L.A. traffic.

Molly Eichel Philadelphia Inquirer It's that the second season of True Detective feels ordinary while the first felt extraordinary... The ordinariness is a quality that weighs heavily on True Detective because its cop-show genre is all over TV. Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Chuck Barney San Jose Mercury News All of the lead actors dig deeply into their roles, with Farrell playing the wary, weary burnout to perfection, and Vaughn shifting into full-throttle intensity. Rated: 3/4 Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Melinda Houston Sydney Morning Herald While this is distinctly and unmistakably True Detective, it's also something of a reinvention: with the same sense of menace but less claustrophobic, less of a two-hander and with a broader, richer brief. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 13, 2017 Full Review Stephen Marche Esquire Magazine A strange combination of slick overproduction and basic incompetence. Oct 19, 2018 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk There's no problem with the acting talent or the pungently evocative cinematography, but what we need to know is whether this new series can carve itself a niche distinct from its rather-too-familiar antecedent. Rated: 3/5 Jul 24, 2018 Full Review Natalia Marcos El Pais (Spain) There are virtues in the second season of 'True Detective' that are forming an intimate and strong coherence between the two deliveries. lord b Had moments but overall plot and esp ending so so bad. Colin and the other guy were great the girl is how is she fameous? so ugly and horrible. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Zavash Z I saw this season for the second time and I can confidently say that after the first season, the second season is the best, people and critics being unfair to this season.relatively good story, Good characterization, nice actors, excellent acting by Colin Farrell, Vince vaughn , Taylor kitsch and Rachel Mc adams, Beautiful songs,The wonderful opening credits and... Of course, there were some problems, but these rates are completely unfair and were given only because It was not as good as the first season. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Reynaldo S I think this whole series is great. This season was a bit slow at first but it picks up. I kind of like it. Intense scenes, great acting especially during episode 6. Actually watching episode 7 right now... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Nancy L Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell's performance is worth a watch, but otherwise the rest of the cast fell flat. The backstories of the main detectives was poorly written, felt like they could have focused on fewer characters and wrote a more robust and interesting story. Dissatisfying ending. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Nerissa S Such a disappointment after the first season. The cast is great and there are some great performances, but they can't save a dull and needlessly convoluted story. It's really hard to like Woodrugh's character or care about the criminal conspiracy at the heart of the show. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Audience Member A very strong crime drama. The ending of the story is very emotional. The second season is a really underrated. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
