Overview:

The Analize Journal invites submissions for the next issue focused on the impact of illiberalism on urban planning through the lens of discrimination effects. In recent years, the world has witnessed a resurgence of authoritarian ideologies and practices that challenge the principles of democracy, equity, and social justice under the form of illiberalism (Laruelle 2022). This resurgence has had significant implications for urban planning and the lived experiences of diverse urban populations on basis of gender, class, ethnicity, etc. However new the notion of illiberalism might be, if applied to urban formation processes, it has the potential of unravelling decisions made based on something different than the common interest. This difference crystallises as swerves from previously agreed long-term planning to short-term financial gains for a small elite, urban interventions aimed at excluding certain groups (see anti-homeless urban furniture), displacements of ethnic groups to places that are disconnected infrastructurally from the basic services of a city — Pata Rât, Romania; Miskolc, Hungary (Dürr 2023) —, smart urbanism used to surveil and exclude (Das and Kumar 2023; Luger 2023; Dürr 2023).

Moreover, there are changes that impede on the newly-acquired women and LGBTQ+’s rights, like pushing back on naming streets after women, on taking gender into account when planning on any scale, to implications on environmental planning which reinforce an unequal status quo.

This special issue aims to bring together scholars, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to critically analyse the complex relationship between illiberalism and its impact on exclusion through urban planning. We welcome interdisciplinary and innovative contributions that shed light on the multifaceted aspects of this crucial nexus.

Topics of Interest:

We encourage submissions on a wide range of topics related to illiberalism, gender, and urban planning, including but not limited to:

  1. Gendered Spaces: Exploring how illiberalism affects the spatial experiences and rights of different genders within urban environments.
  2. Urban Policies: Analysing the impact of illiberal policies on urban planning strategies, housing, transportation, environment, and public spaces in relation to gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, etc.
  3. Community and Participation: Investigating how illiberalism influences community engagement, participation, and the voices of marginalised groups in shaping urban spaces.
  4. Identity and Inclusivity: Examining how illiberalism intersects with issues of identity, diversity, and inclusivity in urban planning processes.
  5. Case Studies: Presenting case studies from diverse geographic and cultural contexts that highlight the challenges and opportunities for addressing illiberalism and gender in urban planning.
  6. Intersectionality: Addressing the intersections of illiberalism with other social factors such as race, class, sexuality, and disability in the context of urban planning.
  7. Urban Image(ry): Assessing the messages conveyed to citizens through the urban imagery and/or morphology (media, street names, statues, architecture details, urban fabric, etc.).
  8. Any other subject not stated here but connected to the general theme.

Submission Guidelines:

Please submit your original research papers, reviews, or perspectives to the special issue on Illiberalism, Gender, and Urban Planning through the Analize Journal’s online submission system. Manuscripts should adhere to the journal’s formatting guidelines, which can be found on our website.

All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer-review process to ensure the quality and rigour of accepted papers.

* Cătălina Frâncu is an architect currently working on an analysis of the dimension of gender in Romania’s governmental development strategies for territory. She is an editor and ongoing contributor of the Zeppelin Architecture Magazine and she has been involved in various projects with the Romanian Order of Architects on urban inclusion, architectural market analysis, built heritage, and others.

She coordinates the current issue of the Analize Journal of Feminist Studies on Illiberalism, Gender, and Urban Planning and is an active member of the first feminist NGO in Romania, The Romanian Society for Feminist Analysis AnA.

Cătălina graduated architecture at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville and is currently working towards a Masters’ diploma in Gender, Minorities and Policy studies. She co-authored two books on architecture, Oameni la lucru în casele lor [At Work At Home] and the forthcoming monograph on the Romanian architecture office ADN BA.
