Spillage Paperback – February 14, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
The rock and roll-loving pair– Joan and Eliot —came of age in the late 1960s when the counterculture peaked. They've lived together in New York's East Village for eight years, making sweet music on the subways while their beloved city crumbled around them. Then, in shades of the Faustian musical Damn Yankees, Joan develops an obsession with The Swan and makes a deal with the Devil to capture his heart. Meanwhile, Eliot wrestles with what it means to preserve his own soul as he makes a valiant effort to win her back and save the day.
Spillage is a wickedly fun throwback to a chaotic time. At its heart, the novel is a love story and a search for identity in a world that's gone off the rails.
Michael Gross began writing Spillage in 1976, the year the story takes place, while working as Managing Editor of Fiction magazine, teaching, and earning his MFA at New York's City College. He also has a BA from Trinity College and an MBA from NYU, and was the recipient of a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. In 1978, he embarked on a forty-five-year career in crisis communications, culminating in his serving as CEO of Finsbury (now FGS Global). He is married, has three children and three grandchildren, and divides his time between Brooklyn and Fire Island.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2024In his terrific Spillage, Michael Gross absorbs and assimilates his comic antecedents (Heller and Roth, Pynchon and Barthelme), and makes something wholly new, in the process resurrecting a lost NYC in all its grubby, neon-Bosch, mid-70s Taxi Driver/The Warriors heyday.
The thing reads like a bullet, there’s delight and invention to be found on every page, and what’s perhaps most remarkable for a comedic work like this is the tension that exists between the antic goings-on and the observational detail; the whirligigging plot and the cool precision of the prose. Spillage has in its corner the energy of youth, the wisdom of time, and technique that bridges that distance. (The novel’s history, relayed in a short essay at the end, is quite moving, and casts the entire work in a kind of retrospective afterglow.)
True to its title, Spillage overflows with effervescent humor, good vibes, love of its essential city, and wonder at this crazy thing called life. A sensational first book, and an original one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024"Spillage" is an extremely well-written novel that excels in creating an immersive experience of an alternate reality New York City in the late '70s. The author captures a chaotic and, at times, even psychedelic snapshot of a city embroiled in a battle for its very soul. This superb setting is unfortunately populated with characters who are either not very fleshed out (like a gypsy fortune teller who may or may not be God), or, for the few who are, simply unlikable. Our main characters (an adulterous trust-funded artist and a Marxist cuckold) merely experience the plot, exerting almost no control over the outcome of their ordeal.
One can't help but make a comparison to Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita," a novel with a very similar premise—the devil running amok in a major city at a pivotal point in history. Whereas in "Margarita," the reader is satisfied that each character is dealt with accordingly, the wicked punished and the not-so-wicked less so, here in "Spillage," it seems almost as if a happy ending needed to be salvaged for a cast that was not entirely deserving of one.
I would say that "Spillage" is certainly worth a read, but while the shortcomings of its characters are overcome by the beautifully crafted setting and dream-like narrative, it may still leave the reader unsatisfied.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024Michael Gross has achieved a literary miracle: he has made a diehard Red Sox fan like me root for the Yankees to win the World Series. Of course it's 1976, so not too hard to digest. Our protagonists are two maturing Woodstock-era hippies now living in New York's Lower East Side. Eliot is a low-energy mensch who just wants to marry Joan and have a baby. Meanwhile Joan is depressed, apparently because her estranged father is a an abuser, an adulterer, an ad man and a Nixon operative (it's not clear which is worse). Like many before her, Joan finds new life through obsessive super-fandom, in this case a rookie pitcher named Nick Spillage, who has given hope to the Yankees. But in a crumbling city that is reaching its nadir, a lot of people are making deals with the devil, including Joan. This sets off a riotous escapade involving everyone from the high and mighty to the lowly and desperate. A crucial scene takes place in Coney Island but in a way, all of New York has become a funhouse, and once you've made a Faustian bargain, it's hard to regain your moral compass. In "Spillage" the cultural allusions come fast and furiously, enhancing the pleasure of any student of this tumultuous era (meaning you don't need to be a baseball fan to enjoy the novel). Gross has written a fast-paced, wildly imaginative book that keeps you hanging until the last out is recorded.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2024I really enjoy reading books about New York. I have not been there, so I like to read and picture myself there, no matter what the decade. This book was set in the 70s, so before I was born. It had a baseball theme through it and I was able to follow along with that, since it is my favorite professional sport. Spillage was not the typical book I read, but that is one of the reasons I decided to read it. I am very interested in seeing more from this author. This book will be passed along to other book lovers who enjoy reading about New York.
Thank you for the copy, this is my honest opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2024What a story! and ... What a read! I couldn't put it down. The narrative immediately draws a reader in. A terrific snapshot of NYC in the 70's, when it was gritty and edgy and back on its heels trying to find a way forward. Michael Gross's characters are spot on for the time, saying things you'd scratch your head about then, and realize today that's exactly what they would have said and done. Highly recommend.
