An epic YA adventure story about two friends lost in the Canadian wilderness from Danika Stone, the author of All the Feels.

Vale loves to hike, but kind of hates her classmates. Ash is okay with his classmates, but kind of hates the outdoors. So, needless to say they are both fairly certain that the overnight nature hike with their PE class is going to be a hellish experience. But when they get separated from the group during a storm, they have worse things to worry about than bullies and blisters.

Lost in the Canadian wilderness with limited supplies, caught in dangerous weather conditions, and surrounded by deadly wildlife, it's going to take every bit of strength, skill, and luck they can muster to survive.

Chosen as one of the best young adult books of 2019 by the Canadian Children's Book Centre (Fall 2019 edition)

"Switchback kept me on the edge of my seat and reading well into the night. It's a harrowing tale of survival, a vivid ode to the beautiful but unforgiving Canadian wilderness, and a gorgeous story of friendship all rolled into one. You'll want to hunker down with a good, warm blanket as you embark on this thrilling, unputdownable ride."

I Preordered Switchback by Danika Stone and I am so glad I did! Vale and Ash are best friends and in the same Phys Ed class. Ms. Holland is the teacher and a requirement of passing the class is an overnight hiking trip through the Canadian forest. Vale and Ash fall behind the rest of the group and accidentally walk off on the wrong trail and get lost deep in the forest! They encounter many different types of wildlife and battle the elements while dealing with very limited supplies, it is fight for Survival!!

This book is a wild ride with lots of surprises and thrills but it is much more than a survival novel. Vale is relentlessly bullied at school and had been online as well, she struggles with social isolation and her best friend Ash is the class clown that gets along with everyone, Vale counts on Ash's presence to take the focus off her as a bully target but it only works to a point and it causes Vale to have low self esteem and she sees the world as a hostile, lonely place. The Isolation comes around full circle when after getting lost in the woods, Vale is panicking whenever Ash is not near, she fears she is really truly alone in the world. Ash feels a heavy layer of guilt of being Vale's best friend only to let her down time and time again by not standing up to the ones that bully her and being the friend she truly needs and deserves. The time in the woods causes much reflection for both characters as they are pushed to the limits physically and emotionally.

I really connected with Vale, having been a victim of bullying myself in school years ago, I understand what that feels like, the isolation that causes and emotional strain is accurately represented here and the trials of a long time friendship is clearly shown through joy, laughter and tears.

In conclusion, this novel has something for everyone! Even an Epic Snowball Fight!! I highly recommend Switchback!! Pick it up today!!

What a fun book this was! I could feel the bone-chilling cold and desperation right along with Vale and Ash as they traversed the snowy mountains of the Canadian Rockies. Separated from a high school class hiking trip, they face ever more harrowing obstacles and challenges in their fight to survive even the first night. The author does a fantastic job of fleshing out the characters, opposites but best friends, and spends as much time developing the third main character of the novel...nature itself. The book is aimed at the YA reader, but any age can enjoy it.

    **3.5 Stars**

Ash would much rather spend his time online gaming in his mom's basement than actually go outside, so when the class has their mandatory overnight hike he is less than thrilled. Vale loves the outdoors and hiking, but is dreading the hiking trip for another reason- the never ending bullying that she is the brunt of. When the friends find themselves left behind during the hike, they never expected that they would have to survive the wilderness alone- or all the challenges that would stalk them.

Vale was totally my hero! She was prepared and calm under pressure, assessing every situation and finagling her way to a solution. She gets a five out of five for survival- I would want to go camping/survivaling (hey, I can make up words!) with this smart girl. Ash on the other hand is a hot mess. He has a great personality and tries really hard, but basically he would have died the first night without Vale and her mad skills. He did have his uses, like the comic relief life always needs (and the packing of gum) and he came to realize how important Vale really is, how she kept him alive, and how friends need to be treated.

I really appreciated how no way was this a romance; it is refreshing to have a YA book without romance, just a great platonic friendship as the main relationship dynamic- and they really were the best of friends to each other. Both teens were supportive and respectful of each other's feelings and actions, which was really sweet actually. In a side note, Vale is aro-ace, which I did not know anything about before reading the book so it was really nice to learn about it and have a strong, capable representation in action.

Switchback was an intense action adventure that took place over a few days and focused on survival and friendship. Once the story got started, I don't believe there was a single dull moment. I read the book in just a few hours since the writing style was easy to read, and honestly I could not stop because I needed to know what would happen next! Danika is the queen of creating tension, I was so stressed out for Ash and Vale and the surprises just kept coming.

I love survival stories and usually end up reading about zombies as it is hard to find a really good survival story in YA. The bullying brought me back to my school days of hell. I was glad at the end of was not sugar coated and had the bullies think they were cool now and just stopped. Bullies never stop they get worse until you stand up for yourself. The story was amazing and very realistic. Loved every minute of it!

When out on an overnight school camping trip, best friends Vale and Ash become separated from their class. Frigid temperatures, snow, and bears threaten their lives over and over. Ash, is an easy-going gamer with zero outdoor skills. In contrast, Ash is socially withdrawn - due to bullying - but very comfortable with nature.

This was a quick read. It was well paced and moved nicely. However, the characters seemed a bit stereotypical and the plot was predictable. I think the dynamic between Ash and Vale will appeal to many teenagers, but the book just wasn't for me. Overall, 3 out of 5 stars.

The camping, the wilderness, the survival, the turmoil of going on this trip because of the way other classmates treated her with the exception of one close friend...is exactly what makes this book so hard to put down!

I’ve just finished this moments ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a YA book, but it didn’t put me off. I love books with this synopsis so just had to read it. I wasn’t disappointed. The suspense was brilliant and I just had to know what happened, I read it in one day. Mike Reynolds is your typical bully, I did find Vale a little annoying at times, but did have to marvel at her survival skills. Ash’s jokes well… Left something to be desired but did have me groaning out loud at times! A great novel and worth the price I paid to read it.
