Let's take stock of how much consumption we have been able to shift from animals to other sources, in India. It may be tempting to look at the current snapshot of the plant-based food space and make statements about how early the industry is. But the animal protection movement has been at work for decades now, and a lot has been accomplished. A notable policy accomplishment was India banning animal testing for cosmetics about a decade ago, and it has led to a lot of stimulus in the industry. Take a look at the personal care and nutraceutical markets, where it is easy to find vegan products and many successful companies selling them. A few companies have broken the 100 crore revenue mark. Personal care: Fully vegan- -Plum Goodness -Nature’s Co -Arata -Fae Beauty etc. Vegan options- - Nykaa -Mamaearth -Sugar cosmetics -Biotique etc. Supplements and wellness Fully vegan- Plix (one of India’s biggest D2C success stories) Cosmix bGreen (owned by Healthkart) Origin Unived Nourish You/One Good etc. Vegan Options- Oziva Setu etc. I’ve missed out on a lot of names simply because there are so many startups. This list does not do justice. There isn't much resistance in these categories and we've seen customers welcome vegan products. It bodes well for the movement that entire pockets of consumption have shifted toward non-animal ingredients and I see this trend continuing. Food is the largest category (milk, eggs and meat are a 20+ lakh crore market) but the customer is also the most discerning. Taste buds, culture, familiarity, price, accessibility etc play a big role, and alt proteins have some distance to cover here. There's a lot of reasons to be hopeful. The size of the opportunity isn't small, the movement has done well in other segments. To my colleagues in the industry- chin up! We got this.

Indian consumers today are increasingly seeking healthier food choices and most responsible food companies are reacting to these evolving needs through the advances in food ingredients which enable formulators to create products that are tasty & healthy. That said, it is important that the solutions are relevant and affordable in the Indian context. Big event days in the D2C space play a pivotal role in designing their path to traction. Product launches, Festive Sales, End of Season Sale, Flash Sale, National holidays; all comprise Big Event Days. If done right, the brands get revenue growth, new customers, increased awareness, stock clearance; which help them set competitive advantage. While strategizing and executing the big event days for the top Fortune 500 brands, I divided these events into 3 phases: Phase 1: Planning and preparation (starts 4-6 weeks prior to the event): This includes Research and Analysis, Goal Setting and Budgeting, Campaign Planning and set up, optimize listings, influencer collaborations. Phase 2: Event Launch and Live Promotion: Launch campaigns, deals and discounts, monitor reviews, engage and interact. Phase 3: Post-Event Phase (after the event till next 3 weeks): Analytics and insights, a thank you campaign, reviews and feedback, optimizations. These big event days come with the growth of the brands. On many occasions, there were growth surging anywhere from 1.2X to even 5X.
