Local Juneteenth Events Flourish This Week

Published on Jun 14, 2022

There has been an increase in Juneteenth celebrations around the country in recent years, and this year the Pasadena area will see more, too.

President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act last year, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Officially the day is on June 19, which falls on Sunday this year.

Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States (two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation the news reached Texas and upon learning of the abolition of slavery the former slaves immediately began celebrating with prayer, feasting, song and dance).

It is now a day to reflect and celebrate African American history and culture.

Here is our guide to notable local events marking Juneteenth 2022.
