Features and facilities

Skate park

The Greenhead Park skatepark is a great attraction for young people who want to hone their skateboarding skills. The site welcomes BMX bikers and rollerbladers as well as skateboarders, and there's free and open access during park opening hours.

Bowling greens

There are two bowling greens which are used by the Greenhead Park Bowling Club for matches and practice. There is usually at least one green available for public use during the bowling season, and the Friends of Greenhead Park and Bowling Club are keen to encourage people who haven't tried bowling before to have a go.

Huddersfield Croquet Club also play on the lower green and welcome new members.

Refreshment rooms and public toilets

The park's refreshment rooms pavilion, near the tennis courts, was built in the 1920's, and has now been fully refurbished, featuring the popular café, public toilets and the addition of a community room for hire by schools and groups.

The cafe is normally open from 9am - 4pm in summer and 10am to 3pm in winter, however this is dependant on the weather.

Miniature railway, horse and carriage rides and childrens rides

Miniature steam railway

Run by volunteers from the Huddersfield Society of Model Engineers, the current miniature railway opened in Greenhead Park in August 2000. Live steam locomotives run along the 1/3 mile track, starting and finishing at the station behind the Refreshment Rooms building.

The railway operates on Saturday afternoons, from 1.30pm to 4pm, weather and staffing permitting.

Play areas

There are two children's play areas with equipment for children of all ages.

A playground, near the Café in the Park and sports courts, was created during the restoration of the park and includes a zip wire, playtower, swings, climbing wall and more. There's a fenced area for younger children with smaller equipment.

A second play area is also available, providing fantastic new play equipment and natural play features right in the middle of the park.

Both play areas have picnic tables for families to enjoy.

Paddling pool and ornamental lake

Paddling pool

The paddling pool has provided summer fun for children since the 1930's and is still a big attraction on sunny days. The pool is normally open from late May to September, depending on the weather. The water is treated daily to keep it clean and leaves, debris and litter are also removed on a daily basis.

Ornamental lake

The largest of the park's five lakes has been reconstructed and is proving to be a very popular spot, for wildlife and human visitors alike.

Bandstand

This restored timber design with chinoiserie detail dates from the 1890s and will be a key feature for musical events.

Italian gardens

The Italian Gardens are the part of the park which is the more tranquil, relaxing area - with all the flower beds, focused around the recently refurbished fountain.

Conservatory and café

This building was added to the park in the late 1920's, has been fully reglazed and joins on to a new two-storey building which provides a wonderful restaurant and event space for the park.

Opening times

  • Monday to Friday: 10am till 3pm
  • Saturday and Sunday, Bank and school holidays: 9am till 4pm
