Toyota: Road to recall

Toyota: Road to recall

Most news organizations reported Toyota’s Sept. 29, 2009, decision to recall nearly 4 million vehicles to prevent floor mats from trapping gas pedals open, causing sudden acceleration, and left it at that. Times reporters Ken Bensinger and Ralph Vartabedian took a harder look. Their 2009 stories proved prescient when, early in 2010, Toyota announced that sticking gas pedals were also at fault and federal investigators began looking at other causes. Bensinger and Vartabedian were named finalists for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting.
