As I said in my previous post, I wanted to share the video with the talk on accessibility in digital products given by Isaura Fontcuberta at the last Friends of Figma Barcelona for those of you who couldn't attend. When we read the word ‘disability’, probably the first thing that comes to mind is a blind person or a person in a wheelchair. That was the first thing that came to my mind when Isaura asked us that question during her talk. Actually, the word ‘disability’ refers to the situation of a person who, due to long-term physical, sensory, intellectual or mental conditions, has difficulties in participating or being included in society. We have probably all found ourselves in a situation of disability at some point in our lives, perhaps due to temporary injuries, etc. 👉 More than 15% of the world's population lives with some kind of disability. In Spain it is 10% of the population. Ensuring that our products are accessible to all not only extends our reach, but also promotes inclusion and equality. 👉 From 2025, A11y laws will start to apply in the EU and all our products will have to be able to ensure accessibility. Beyond the fact that a law will impose that on us, we cannot think about usability without talking about accessibility. In this talk you will find a lot of keys to start designing with an accessibility type of mind. Once again thanks Isaura Fontcuberta and Friends of Figma Barcelona for organizing this kind of talks. Today, I’m involved in the hiring process for graduates of UX/UI designers in our Barcelona hub. This should be a pleasant moment as it involves extending my team, but it leaves me with a better sweet taste. We’ve received 426 applicants for two roles, so they only have one chance on 213 approx 0.5% of chance to be chosen. We had to ask them to create a quick video presenting themselves, and it's heartbreaking to hear so many of them say how much they appreciate that we trust freshly graduated people to join us. I could feel their emotions there and sad for our industry and society. By highlighting the positive aspects of our jobs, we are enhancing the user experience, which is excellent. We made many people dream about it; many UX boot camps started to be created, and more conferences were held. But where are we going if the market does not follow or never considers hiring a fresh pair of eyes? We can't always expect to hire senior team members if we pretend to be user-centric in our industry. We need a balanced team with a mix of experienced professionals and fresh graduates to truly understand and cater to our users’ needs. Believe it or not, there’s no better than a Gen-z or Gen-alpha to understand Gen-z or Gen-alpha’s needs and expectations. By not trusting enough graduates, we’re not doing the right thing for the people and impacting our companies by preparing those to fail. Let’s not overlook the potential of fresh graduates to bring a new perspective and energy to our teams. Next time you have the chance to hire, consider graduates too. It’s our responsibility to give them a chance, and it’s a proactive step towards a more diverse and innovative industry.
