Commissioning of the West Coast mine's processing plant was ongoing, but 1204 tonnes of concentrate had been produced by October 12, new owner Mallee Resources Limited's 2021-22 annual report said.

"First concentrate sales are expected in October 2022," it said.

Mallee acquired the mine and related assets via a deed of company arrangement, intending to bring it back to life after a long period of care and maintenance.

"The Avebury Nickel Project is a great asset which has already transformed Mallee into a nickel producer and, potentially, as a future carbon neutral nickel producer," chairperson Jeffrey Moore said in the annual report.

"This acquisition occurs at a time when nickel is being increasingly recognised as an essential commodity in the decarbonisation and electrification of transport and industry globally."

Mallee shareholders approved the acquisition on June 29.

Mr Moore said the company had hit the ground running since then.

"Underground mining operations commenced in July and the processing plant became operational in September, with sale-ready nickel concentrate being produced at Avebury shortly thereafter," he said.

"The transformation of Mallee to a mine producer in the past year is an extraordinary achievement and was made possible by the dedication, talent and unfailing belief in your company by its technical and management team under the leadership of (managing director) John Lamb.

"The team has worked tirelessly to deliver this mine acquisition and bring it into production as seamlessly as possible."

Mallee's shares have been suspended from ASX trading for an extended period.

Mr Moore said the board recognised a return to ASX trading was fundamental for shareholders.

He said the board was doing everything it could to get reinstatement of trading on the ASX as quickly as possible.

The report said the workforce had grown from six full-time staff to more than 150.

"Around 30 per cent of Avebury's workforce are local residents, which is an important characteristic of our workforce," it said.

"It creates stability in our workforce, community awareness and advocacy for the mine and provides a great stimulus to the local economy."
