St George Mining (SGQ) has spotted lithium bearing pegmatites in the first drill holes at the Jailbreak prospect within its Mt Alexander project, Western Australia.
The project comprises six exploration licences and SGQ’s current exploration work includes both rock chip sampling and maiden reverse circulation drilling.
The drilling work is being carried out at the Jailbreak prospect which spans two licences, E29/638 which is held in joint venture with IGO (ASX:IGO) and E29/962 which is wholly owned by SGQ.
Work at Jailbreak is testing six outcropping lithium-bearing pegmatite dykes.
While the drilling program is in its infancy, multiple intervals of pegmatite up to 13 metres thick were intersected from surface with visual lithium-bearing minerals logged in drill chips.
Now, a diamond drill rig has been organised to begin simultaneously testing for deeper extensions to the mineralised pegmatites identified.
This is expected to assist with the geological interpretation of the evolving lithium targets.
Following this, diamond drilling will test high-priority nickel targets.
In testing both nickel and lithium targets, the company’s Executive Chair John Prineas said the next few weeks will make for a very productive end to the year.
Meanwhile, SGQ reported the highest lithium grades to date from the second batch of rock chip samples taken at Jailbreak.
Of the samples submitted, 13 returned assay values of more than one per cent lithium oxide across five pegmatite dykes within a north-south zone extending 1.7 kilometres.
St George said the results confirm the prospectivity and the expanding footprint of lithium-bearing pegmatites at Jailbreak.
Assays are pending for over 100 rock chip samples taken across a 15-kilometre pegmatite corridor parallel to the Copperfield Granite.
St George shares were up 8.33 per cent to trade at 7.8 cents at 11:32 am AEDT.
