With the risk and impact of stroke rising globally, it’s crucial we come together to make a positive change: 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝑨𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒔 ➡ 93.8 million stroke survivors worldwide, with 11.9 million new cases and 7.3 million stroke-related deaths in 2021. ➡ In 2023, 15 million people worldwide experienced a stroke. ➡ India faces an incidence rate of 145 per 100,000, with three people having a stroke every minute; ➡ In the U.S., 100,000 strokes occur annually, causing 30,000 deaths. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 ➡ Median hospital stay for stroke patients: 9.7 days. ➡ Discharge outcomes: 61.8% go home, 29.3% to rehab, and 8.8% experience in-hospital mortality. Earlier today, the #RedCross and #RedCrescent Movement adopted a wide-ranging resolution on “#Weapons and #IHL”. The resolution covers the challenges and opportunities that require action to address the most pressing humanitarian concerns in relation to the use and development of #weapons: ▶ The resolution calls on States to take specific actions on #NuclearWeapons, including joining and fully implementing both the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons #NPT and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons #TPNW and taking concrete steps to reduce the risk of the deliberate or accidental use of nuclear weapons. ▶ The resolution emphasizes that States must give greater weight to the humanitarian consequences of #ArmsTransfer decisions, and take concrete measures to this end. ▶ The resolution reinvigorates our collective commitment to fully and effectively implementing the 2009 Movement Strategy on #Landmines, #ClusterMunitions and Other #ExplosiveRemnantsofWar. ▶ The resolution calls for States to address the humanitarian, legal and ethical risks posed by #NewTechnologies of #Warfare. It embodies a principled, cohesive, humanitarian Movement voice on #AutonomousWeapons systems #LAWS, in particular by calling on them to adopt new legally-binding rules. ▶ The resolution articulates the Movement’s support for the #DigitalEmblem project. Like the Movement’s work to assist victims of war, its efforts to address arms-related issues, on the basis of #IHL, have saved lives and prevented suffering. The Movement’s long-standing commitment in this area is based on the conviction, supported by decades of evidence gathered in the field, that international regulation of weapons based on their humanitarian impact is a highly effective tool for supporting compliance with IHL and reducing the in humanity of war. The climate emergency is having devastating consequences for human health. A new report by MSF's Humanitarian Action for Climate and Environment (HACE) Initiative and Heidelberg University Institute of Global Health describes how climate change deals a "double blow" to life-saving humanitarian aid by simultaneously multiplying health risks and making humanitarian interventions more difficult and complex. Drawing on interviews with 49 humanitarian staff in 30 countries worldwide, the report details how rapid and slow-onset climate hazards, changes in water availability and quality, and food scarcity linked to climate change are amplifying humanitarian needs. MSF teams are beginning to adapt to this scenario alongside the communities in which they work. "I think we've got the opportunity to… refine our way of working. In Madagascar for example… doing data driven e-prep [emergency preparedness]… and surveillance, not just for infectious diseases, but of things like rainfall or crop yields, and food insecurity and malnutrition, rather than waiting for the kids with severe acute malnutrition to start turning up," says an MSF humanitarian worker in Switzerland 📑 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ee2hsjM4

Uganda humanitarian landscape is a hybrid of both acute and protracted refugee situations, hosting approximately 1.7 million refugees from neighbouring countries, with a majority from the neighbouring South Sudan. While the number of refugees has gradually increased, humanitarian funding has gradually decreased, and as a result, there is limited funding for critical support in food, education, water sanitation and hygiene. According to Sida, nearly half of the children are malnutrition as a result of both general food assistance and reduced preventative health and nutrition intervention due to.. you guessed right.. reduced funding! While hailed as a champion of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) and having enabling policies, and tangible development funding, there seems to be a slow transition from short-term life-saving to medium- and longer-term resilience support for the protracted refugee population. The policy-practice dissonance is loud, and gaping. I believe that the key to supporting particularly protracted refugees is unlocking their potential and equipping them to become self-reliant.

Climate change is impacting almost every aspect of children’s health and well-being, from their first days of life to adolescence. From rising temperatures affecting school performance to droughts leading to undernutrition, floods leading to injuries and air pollution increasing adverse birth outcomes, the climate crisis is taking a toll on children’s health. Leaders must take urgent #ClimateAction.
