ABOUT WRECKING BALL: THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONG
10 years ago Miley Cyrus came crashing in. Wrecking Ball, the second single off her third album Bangerz, arrived with as much might as its title suggests. It was the summer of 2013, and Miley had already turned heads with the album's lead single We Can't Stop. Wrecking Ball stopped the world once more, but in a very different way.
The heartbreaking ballad was as emotionally raw as we'd heard her, a powerful declaration of heartache that came together under the most serendipitous of circumstances. In this special episode celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Wrecking Ball Sam Murphy, otherwise known as Popsam Cam, takes us on a journey to discover the people behind the song. Throughout this episode, we're going to talk to everyone, from the song's writers and producers, to artists who have covered the song.
We've got Dolly Parton, Producer Circuit, and original songwriters Stephan Mocchio and Mozella. Together, we'll celebrate a decade of Wrecking Ball by tracing how it went from a classical piano line to Miley's first ever Billboard number one and a pop behemoth. She'd done ballads before, notably The Climb, but Wrecking Ball was different. It housed an intensity that translated in emotional maturity. It also had a show stopping vocal that carried a powerhouse chorus, and it's been covered by everyone from Dolly Parton to Haim.
And then, of course, There's the video. It was one of those drop everything pop culture moments. The video depicted Cyrus swinging naked atop a wrecking ball. The internet went into a frenzy. It garnered 19.3 million views in the first 24 hours, a VEVO record at the time, and was a meme machine. It shot Wrecking Ball to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Nine weeks later, it returned, marking the largest gap between time at number one in Billboard history. The song is one of the most successful of the 2010s, landing at number 99 on Billboard's Decade End chart. Ten years later, the virality may have died down, but the song's impact hasn't. There's a timelessness to Wrecking Ball that's a testament to the songwriting and Cyrus' incredible delivery.
It's a rare pop song that outlasts its moment. Let's go deep on Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball.
