Research Smartz: Discovering Your Civic Power

Research Smartz: Discovering Your Civic Power Online

“Our Constitution is a remarkable, beautiful gift. But it’s really just a piece of parchment. It has no power on its own. We, the people, give it power.” – Barack Obama. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Did you know that as a student, you can register to vote in Ellensburg’s local elections? These local elections impact many issues such as affordable housing, transportation, recreation, and more! Engaged citizens are essential to a healthy democracy, they have the power to make change happen in government. However, if you don’t learn about and apply this power, someone else will do it for you – often against your own interests. The League of Women Voters will help you discover your civic power as they go over the role of local government, where you can register to vote, where you can find nonpartisan information on government officials, and answer any questions you may have.
