The Boulet Brothers Ink Multi-Project Deal With Shudder to Expand the ‘Dragula’ Franchise
Following the massive success of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula’s fourth season (which became one of Shudder’s most watched series of 2021), Shudder, AMC Network’s premium streamer for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has inked a deal with horror drag icons The Boulet Brothers to expand their Boulet Brothers’ Dragula franchise with a new season, a new spinoff series and an additional special set to debut on Shudder over the next twelve months.
The first project is a full season spin-off series based on their celebrated ground-breaking reality competition series The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula that has already finished principle filming, and will debut this fall. The series’ format, content and cast are still being closely guarded, but details on the project’s creative are forthcoming.
“With The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula and Resurrection, the Boulet Brothers have proven to be uniquely talented producers and storytellers, creating innovative, inclusive programming that smashes genres and draws a large and loyal following. We’re excited to be working with them on their upcoming new competition series, with more to come in 2023,” said Craig Engler, Shudder’s General Manager.
“This is an incredibly exciting time to be a Dragula fan. This new partnership with Shudder (and the AMC family) provides an incredible opportunity for us to expand our cinematic universe and to flesh out all of the characters, stories and stars that audiences have fallen in love with over the years,” said the Boulet Brothers. “We couldn’t be more excited about the content that we’re about to unleash, and if fans have felt shocked and engaged with our content in the past, they are truly not ready for what’s coming next. It’s going to be a wild, fun, and terrifying new ride.”
Dubbed “horror’s new icons” by Fangoria in a cover story (which became the magazine’s fastest-selling issue), The Boulet Brothers have become the go-to source for horror commentary in the pop culture zeitgeist. Shining a light on the world of cutting edge queer culture, The Boulet Brothers are entrepreneurial multi-hyphenates who have their claws in all aspects of their creative projects, be it in the writing, artistic vision, illustration, music production, costume design, logistical coordination or business affairs.
From appearing on the cover of legendary comic magazine Heavy Metal, to emceeing at high-profile horror conventions, to coverage in Entertainment Weekly, The Onion AV Club, The Advocate, Alternative Press and more, to cultivating a robust and dedicated following via The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, the duo of Dracmorda and Swanthula have and will continue to break boundaries and broaden horizons within both horror and queer communities.
This week has brought a lot of confusion about “Crystal Lake,” A24, Peacock and Bryan Fuller’s (“Hannibal”) television series expansion of the Friday the 13th franchise. While reports and rumors spread about A24 pulling the plug on the series, we told you on Monday that that’s not exactly the case. Rather, the project is being retooled behind the scenes.
So what exactly is going on here? Bryan Fuller has taken to Instagram tonight to provide an update. The bad news? Fuller is no longer involved with the “Crystal Lake” series.
The good news? That doesn’t mean A24 is giving up hope on the project.
Fuller writes on Instagram, “Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me.
“When it works, as with HANNIBAL, the results can be powerful for the storytellers and the audience. I couldn’t be more proud of the work my co-showrunner Jim Danger Gray and I were able to accomplish with our brilliant writing staff despite the challenges we faced.
“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material. We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.”
A24 and Peacock are now searching for a new showrunner for the series. Stay tuned.
Peacock had given the project a straight-to-series order in 2022, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela Voorhees. Original Friday the 13th final girl Adrienne King had even signed on for a recurring role in the planned A24 television series.
Bryan Fuller was to serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer, with Victor Miller (who penned the original classic) producing with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24.
Kevin Williamson (Scream, Sick) was on board to write an episode, last we heard.
